bluesign
bluesign® PRODUCT
A global certification system for the textile industry that assesses a product “from the inside” – through chemistry, processes and components, rather than marketing claims.
bluesign® is a standard that examines how technical apparel is made: which substances and processes are used in manufacturing materials, how resource use and emissions are managed, and whether the production chain meets requirements relating to the safety of the people working with the product. It is not a “membrane” and it is not a breathability technology – it is a signal that the product has been designed and produced within a controlled, responsible system.
What the bluesign® PRODUCT label means
If a given model of Taimen waders carries the bluesign® PRODUCT label, it means the finished product meets the requirements of the bluesign system – including the share of verified components (materials and trims). In practice, this is the highest level of bluesign labelling, referring to the complete item rather than to a single fabric alone.
It is worth distinguishing between:
- bluesign® APPROVED – a label for a specific component (for example: a fabric, laminate or trim),
- bluesign® PRODUCT – a label for the finished product, which meets the system requirements as a whole.
What bluesign® means for the angler – practical benefits
- Lower risk of “background chemistry” – the bluesign standard places strong emphasis on controlling substances used in textile production. For the user, the message is simple: you are choosing a product whose manufacture reduces risks linked to undesirable chemistry in the supply chain.
- Greater consistency across components – waders are not just a laminate, but also tapes, threads, zips and finishing elements. bluesign® PRODUCT indicates that the product is built from components selected within a coherent set of requirements, rather than from “random sources”.
- A responsible choice without an “eco-compromise” – bluesign is not a prize for lowering performance. The point of the label is to organise processes and components so that a technical product can remain technical, while responsibility comes from how it is made, not from marketing.
What it means environmentally and socially
The bluesign system evaluates and structures areas such as resource use (including water and energy), control of emissions and pollution, and workplace safety standards. It is not a promise of “zero impact”, but an indication that production impact is controlled and reduced according to defined criteria.
A fair clarification: what bluesign® PRODUCT does not promise
- It is not a performance rating – bluesign does not claim the waders will be more waterproof or more durable. That depends on the laminate, construction, seams and real-world testing.
- It does not mean “zero chemistry” – it means chemistry and processes are managed under a standard focused on safety and environmental impact.
For the user, the message is straightforward: if your waders are labelled bluesign® PRODUCT, you know that behind their functionality sits a structured, responsible manufacturing standard – not merely a claim on the hangtag.
